I love the skylight. This looks like a good place for contemplation and quiet work. It also makes good use of those ankle-breaking sloped lots that are often a good real estate deal because others perceive the land as unusable space. I could also visualize this as a personal space for an adult child to live during college days, without infringing on the parents’ freedom. It could be customized to suit as a man-cave, too.

Who would want to work in something like that?! I’d just relax my entire day away. Nice office, but definitely wouldn’t be a productive work environment for me lol

Very attractive interior and setting. With all the excavation and concrete work, though, I bet the cost of construction would be twice that for an above-grade structure of comparable square footage. Still, I am a big fan of earth-sheltered dwellings, with their unique ambiance and long-term energy savings.

I would love to combine this with a root cellar at the back and a very well insulated wall between.

I love that idea of having your office outside amongst nature. That’s a brilliant idea!! I love the way you have set-up your office space. You don’t have to go that far to work just walk across your yard, don’t have to worry about being late or being stuck in a traffic jam, and you can conserve on gas. Before I forget I just love your wood stove not just for decoration but it will take the chill out of the air on a cool day. I think you thought of everything! Enjoy your space!! Carol

Lovely workspace. I think I’d update the dangling lightbulb a bit (and do something with the bare wires hanging down), but the plywood doesn’t bother me. I like that it’s close to amenities, but away from distractions. Not sure I’d want a wood stove to be the only source of heat, as I find them time consuming and I wouldn’t want to break my concentration to keep refilling/restoking.

They made good use of a tough landscape. I’d hate that lawn upkeep myself – I’d have to get a cow to keep the grass in check. Kind of a lawnmooer, if you will. Or a goat! Less poop to scoop. Can you dry grass-fed goat poop and burn it in the woodstove? Maybe toss in some potpourri or an incense stick? I bet somebody’s figured something out.

“..Less to scoop!!” Nice.. And yes that really is a quiet place to think, reflect and daydream…. Then scramble like heck to meet deadlines!! I really do like it.

My area had 16 inches of rain last month so an office like this would have flooded out. (Of course, if it is in California there wouldn’t be a problems).

Thumbs up for concrete. As this example shows, it is moldable, becoming a part of the landscape.

    And it is permanent.

Unlike wood structures, concrete doesn’t require labels warning about the whole place going up in flames. That ‘death and disfigurement’ thing.

    Dimensions? Drainage? Insulation?

I like this idea, as it has a lot of ecological value, along with it’s economic values, as well as visually pleasing in it’s minimalist form…!

Silly thought, but someone has to mow the grassy area at the bottom of the stairs down to the entry. Hoping there’s a way to get a mower, gas or reel, down there that doesn’t requie lifting.
