I like this design. Clean, simple and practical. The kitchen looks functional and it’s great that you can close the bedroom off…helps when you don’t make the bed!!

That’s one of my daily goals, to make people smile. I have years of practice behind me and I’m getting pretty good at it. Glad to hear my charm even works online. Are you a tiny house dreamer or do you live in one already?

This is really nice. Would be a good layout for a free-standing tiny house. The sliding doors are wonderful and seems to have a fair amount of storage. I’d like to see a photo or two of the bathroom. What are the dimensions of this condo?

    • Eugene

my guess at interior dimensions are 10′ x 29′

A murphy bed or transforming furniture to turn the bedroom into more open day space….or a working office/bedroom area…..also would have like to see the bathroom, can’t have it all sometimes…..nicely designed for 290 square feet

VERY nice! I agree that the layout of this little condo would also work for a great tiny house (although I, too, would like to see pics of the bathroom).

This looks like a long and narrow space – the kind you would have with a shipping container. Nice design for a such a small space. My only criticism is that long metal tube above the stove – the fan, no doubt, but I would have chosen a different kitchen layout to avoid that style.

Yes I agree where is the bathroom? If you want to come to Arizona for a visit I have some interesting tiny houses for rent off season. High season they are very costly and price comes down and I look for nice people in April or May.

It’s too bad we can’t see it but I’m pretty sure it’s on the left as soon as you walk through the front door (before the kitchen)

Okay, Lovers Of Bathrooms…do not stress any further! LOL

Because this floor plan is identical to my friend’s, let me walk you through it.

The bathroom is immediately opposite the long, blank wall, as soon as you open up the only door. The kitchen wall that you see with the frig/microwave is the back of the bathroom wall.

It’s JUST a plain ol’ bathroom: toilet, sink, and tub. Nothing special to photograph or look at. In my friend’s apartment, the builder used the space in-between the studs to have a series of long, skinny cabinets so the storage in her bathroom is OFF THE CHARTS and she uses it to store many more things than bathroom items, including her CD/DVD collection, her jewelry, and seasonal items.

There you have it: Mystery Solved! 😀

This floor plan is 99.99% identical to the studio apartment of a friend of mine in River North, Chicago. The only difference is that she has a MASSIVE closet in that hallway with sliding doors that spans the entire length of the wall opposite the bathroom. I absolutely am bonkers over this design and wish to bits & pieces that MY studio apartment that I lived in for a year was this nicely designed. Cher’s apartment overlooks the Chicago River and Lake Michigan with a giant balcony…killer views from a killer apartment! And it’s wonderful to have the loo be right next to the front door as that’s our 1st stop when we head over to her place. LOL (it’s a ‘girl thang’) I’ve spent many a delighted hour at her home.

It’s so funny that you mentioned Chicago because I have been thinking a lot this past year about how content I was in the studio apartment I lived in on Madison in Chicago. This was, gosh, way back in the mid 90s. Do you know Presidential Towers? I was up on the 30th floor I think… and I had that same type of closet/storage setup you mentioned… it literally spanned the entire hallway from the front door into the space (bathroom on opposite wall right by the front door as well like your friend’s – with kitchen behind the closets) and then it opened up into a big studio. The place was I think 500 sq ft. or maybe 530, I can’t remember for sure. I never felt at a loss for space or storage because of those closets, it was great! Such a coincidence to see your post as I was literally thinking about that exact closet layout last night!! 🙂

        January 24, 2015, 12:12 pm

Greetings from Chi-Town, Kelli!!! So nice to meet another Chicagoan! Oh, I adore Presidential Towers. I have several young friends that live there: Zero commute hassle as they simply roll out of bed and walk to work! No biking, no bus, no cab, no train, no car….a 10 minute to 30 minute walk to work…how sweet is that???

Do you KNOW what’s happened to the West Loop areas since you’ve been gone the past 20+ years? It has EXPLODED and become one of the HOTTEST of HOT areas for people to live in! Every friggin’ thing and place that an Urbanite needs is there: Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Bed-Bath & Beyond, Trader Joe’s…the list goes on and on. And you’re a couple of blocks away from the L.A.K.E. Plus, there is a movie theatre that is ‘sick’: reclining chairs and bar service to watch a film! Several of my friends on the Northside of the city will drive all the way down to the West Loop, just to watch a film in that theatre!

Kelli, you should check out their website. They have many studios for rent right now; average price is about $1,200.00. Considering that you don’t need ANY car to get around, it’s cheap, at half the price!

          January 24, 2015, 12:46 pm

NO! I could die… nobody would ever come down and hang out with me when I lived there… they all made me come up to Old Town and Lincoln Park! I can’t believe it… at night, it was a ghost town down there back then but for the yummy Greek restaurants down on Halsted (if I remember that right). That’s so cool that it’s booming. I’m hoping to get up there to visit some friends soon and will check it out when I do!! 🙂

        • Cahow
          January 24, 2015, 2:18 pm

Oh, dear Kelli, how you made me laugh! LOL & LOL, again!

Yes, yes…I’m all too familiar with the parameters of The Urban Dweller. So many of my Lincoln Park friends believe “There Be Dragons” anywhere WEST of Ashland Avenue! LOL The truly *BOLD* & *ADVENTURESOME* will actually drive to Elston but that.is.it.! Anywhere west of Elston means you’re heading to O’Hare and a trip to Cabo. ~snort~ (BTW, the Elston Corridor has equally exploded…a sight to behold!)

I know all about the Old Town/Lincoln Park refusal to go anywhere north of Belmont or South of North Ave. A dearly beloved friend of mine moved from Hudson/Webster to Foster/L.S.D. and NO ONE…I repeat…not a single one of her her life-long friends from Lincoln Park will visit her, despite Guest Parking! They all force her to go back on down to Halsted to dine and shop. 🙁 And “Yes”, all the Greek restaurants are still on Halsted. Her friends allege that “Foster is too far North.” pfffffttt!!! (For non-Chicagoans, we’re talking about a distance of 2 miles!)

I don’t think you’ll recognize the West Loop any longer. My husband and I bought a condo in Logan Square 12 years ago (2003) and Milwaukee Avenue has become Hipster Haven, when it used to house only Polish Bakeries and Polish Furniture stores. If you desire any crazy micro-brewery beer or any vegan food sensation, Logan Square is now the hang out of Hipsters on Milwaukee. Fortunately, they stay on that street and haven’t invaded MY part of Logan Square, yet.

I sure hope that you get a chance to visit your friends and the new Maggie Daley Park on LSD…it’s spectacular as is Millennium Park.

All the best to you, Kelli! I can talk about my beloved Chicago and Michigan all day long. <3

I’m happy without a separate bedroom in my studio as a single person but this layout would make it more functional for a couple. Having only one window and no balcony would drive me bonkers but otherwise very nice.

    • Cahow
      January 23, 2015, 4:12 pm

Hi, alice h. I know that you have a daybed in your studio and that’s the route that I’d go with in this place. Because I have severe sciatica in my left leg, I can’t sit on bar stools because within 15 minutes ALL sensation is cut off from my leg. So, I’d place a nice dining room table in the living room area for friends to come over (and because I’m obsessed with cooking/baking) and then would use the back room as the living room/daybed area. Since I would NOT be sleeping when I have friends over, the daybed and some cushy/comfy movable chairs would work out for my lifestyle, if I were single. Mind you, I’m basing this all on my friend’s studio where she has a balcony off of the sliding glass doors so that would expand the entertainment area plus offer fair weather seating and a grill, too.

      • alice h
        January 23, 2015, 4:57 pm

I love baking, just made cinnamon swirl bread in a canapé bread tube I found at the thrift shop for 99 cents. Sciatica sounds awful. I’ve got osteoarthritis in the knees, hands are starting to claw up a bit too. I have a 36″ round folding table and one wooden chair. If I have one guest I pull up the computer chair. I can put the table in front of the daybed and seat 2 there, plus the 2 chairs and I can bring in a folding chair for another if need be. I could also fold up the round table, seat 3 or 4 on the daybed, use a longer rectangular folding table and the chairs and get about 10 people in here but that’s only if the people on the sides were skinny and everybody would have to get up and rotate to let someone in or out. I’d have to sit at the end closest to the kitchen area to serve the food, make tea etc.

Completely off topic: I made a killer banana cake with cream cheese frosting, today. Two of our three kids are coming to the cottage tomorrow with their S.O.’s, so I’ll be feeding six this weekend. Can’t wait!!!!!

        January 26, 2015, 9:45 am

Oh, the sliding glass door and balcony is BLISS, Carol. As mentioned above, THIS is one of my friend’s apartment floorplans and there is nothing finer than sitting outside on her balcony during a late Summer evening and watching the weekly fireworks displays firing off over Navy Pier. That back wall is pure glass on her place: fixed panel glass windows surround the patio door. So, even though she faces East and gets amazing strong light in the morning, the window wall lets in bright ambient light all the way to the back of her studio. If I were single, I could live in this footprint my entire life and ask for nothing more. 😀

Just a Head’s Up for lover’s of “Homes Bathed In Colour”: follow the ForFur link, above. It will take you to an article about THIS condo and in the bottom left hand corner, there is a house entitled “House Full Color Colorful Style Romanian”.

For an amazing visual and design treat (and the World’s LONGEST Sofa!) you can’t beat the photos that are shared with us.

And, if you have Google Chrome and it asks you to “Translate This Page”, hit it TWICE and then it is translated into English. The 1st attempt will say that it didn’t translate and it will ask “Try Again?”. Hit it again, and you can read all the descriptions.

Loved the layout of this studio/condo. And I thought the sliding doors between bedroom and living area were great idea.

I would have improved on this concept by:
Colouring them lime green, so that they would break up the brown/cream/dash of tangerine colour scheme.
Put several air plants on the section of the sliding door is always ‘on show’.

Would also ensure that the sliding doors let in a little light from the window, across the very top of the sliding door sections, to avoid that ‘boxed in’ feeling, as there is only one window in the whole space.

For one person this would be a great space, but for two – well, you’d have to get one really well in such a cramped space!

    • Steve Denver
      April 20, 2015, 12:08 pm

I’m with you on maximizing the light from the one window and avoiding the cut-off feeling. Perhaps if the top 1/3 of the doors were clear, or the doors were translucent instead of opaque. Maybe even a sheer curtain that is weighted at the bottom so it hangs nicely.

  • Sharon

I could totally live there. The wardrobe next to the bed is so subtle and well done. The tree view brings nature in! The sliding doors will still allow light in when closed. Fantastic use of color and texture which I think works perfectly in small spaces. Very good. Thanks for sharing design of this quality!

I’ve always loved most studios apartments, and have lived in three different ones during my life..As long as it has ample closet and storage space and enough electrical wall outlets. I’m good to go.. there is something very warm and cozy to live in such a space that’s clutter free, clean, and organized surrounded by all the things you cherish..

The couch and bed would have to be smaller and more mobile, like a floor futon because I would need room for yoga and jump roping. I like a tiny space, but I MUST have space to exercise at home and not be imprisoned by furniture and stuff. The light seems nice.

      April 20, 2015, 11:44 am

I lived two years for free in a house trailer that had been gutted. I bought a king size futon sofa and slept on it without ever unfolding it. If you live alone and find a great sofa solution, a bed is unnecessary. Sometimes two of us slept on that sofa and there was plenty of depth without unfolding it. I just threw a sheet over it at night and if it was chilly I pulled a blanket over myself.

Really beautiful layout and a kitchen that is actually designed for living and not struggling, like many small plans I’ve seen. Is there a bathroom behind the kitchen?

    • Cahow
      April 20, 2015, 12:06 pm

Hi, Steve. Yes, the bathroom is behind the kitchen.

I liked your comment about the kitchen, re: “a kitchen that is actually designed for living and not struggling.” As a Foodie, myself, the KITCHEN is the MOST IMPORTANT room in my life and has always been that way. Any place we’ve lived has been judged on the kitchen, first, and then everything else is last place.

But, I’ve learned that there are folks who are NOT “foodies” and they find eating food just a function to stay alive. In our condo, we’ve had both male and female students and some of them consider a handful of nuts and freeze-dried kale a complete meal. ~groan~ To each their own, I guess, but that is NOT how we live our lives: we are the family that actually sits at a table to DINE, relax and cover the events of the day. So, when I’ve seen tiny homes that feature a kitchen counter no larger than a cutting board with a microwave tucked into the cupboard, I think of the Nuts & Kale crowd and how blissfully happy they are with those spartan accommodations. 😀

      • Steve Denver
        April 20, 2015, 12:15 pm

I know what you mean that not everyone needs a large kitchen. I find it central to living without restaurants and entertaining at home. YES I would entertain in this space.
My good fortune allowed me to purchase a 3000sf house with a 550sf carriage house. When the economy tanked, I renovated the carriage house and moved into it, then rented the main house. After three years of not needing any of my possessions stored in the basement of the new house, I liquidated almost all of it. The feeling was unburdening… and my tenants were happy to pay another $100 for the extra storage space.
I’m fascinated by good design and I become giddy seeing great design, such as your home. I’m very interested in container homes, and your space would adapt very well in such an environment.
