1956 Flexible Vistaliner Motorcoach VL100 (Archived)
This is a very rare and very nice classic bus motorhome conversion. This is built on the VL 100 Vistaliner chassis. This is a very desirable model built from 1955-1959. Elvis bought one and loved to drive it himself! This bus was originally converted by country western singer Ferlin Husky. I bought it in LA 5 years ago and drove it across the US and have had no trouble at all with this great motor coach. The interior is 90s vintage and may need updating to suit you. The cabinet doors and drawers are showing age and don’t close perfectly. The interior is presentable but perhaps due for a makeover. That is the easy part in a bus conversion, the hard things are already done. Mechanically it is perfect and fresh and the exterior paintwork is all new and flawless. It has a fresh 21,000 mile 6V92 Detroit turbocharged diesel motor that is peppy and strong and gets 8MPG. It doesn’t leak anything either, only one Ive ever seen that didn’t! The transmission is an almost new HT740 Allison with only 5000 miles on it. Power steering has been installed. The generator is a Onan 6.5KW gas that has recently been refurbished. New radiator, brakes, torsion bars, inverter and tires on Alcoa polished aluminum wheels. Stainless is good. The bus was recently soda blasted down to the bare rivets and has a magnificent, flawless new $20,000 paint restoration. The windshields are perfect. It has jake brakes, 120 gal fuel tank, 60 gal fresh water tank, 20 gal generator gasoline tank and 100 gallon sewage tank. It has Flexsteel drivers and co pilots chairs and a pull out Flexsteel queen sofa. It has a Norcold refrigerator and a pristine Magic Chef range, a Duo-Therm AC and real hardwood flooring. You can get in it tomorrow and drive anywhere. The bus is in Athens ga. I have the California title but the state of Georgia will not title anything this old so I will give you the CA title and a Georgia bill of sale.

Good looker! Nicely done conversion and beautiful paint job. Flxible buses are wonderful. I had one for 16 years. If you buy one, you automatically become part of a big Flxible owners family. (On the Net, look up FOI: Flxible Owners International, and you’ll see what I mean). Hope this bus finds an appreciative new owner!
That thing is HUGE! If I were lucky enough to have it I would do the inside in a funkier, 40’s and 50’s style. This is a bit too much like any old motor home inside.

This looks like quite a treat on the outside, the mechanicals sound spectacular, and a lot of time and especially dollars have been put into this vehicle fairly recently to keep it hustling down the road, without ANY mechanical downtime!
What is it about this rig that reminds me of the converted unit seen in the movie “Coal Miner’s Daughter?” Specifically the one that belonged to Loretta Lynn, not the earlier buses in which she traveled that belonged to others. May be the common design of the time, with the driver’s section being cantilevered from the passenger compartment, but something about this one strikes a chord!
The interior definitely needs a refresh, but like some others have mentioned, I would definitely take the interior re-do “retro” to suit it’s beautiful exterior, and original age. The current interior is uninspired and dull, with a “too common” feel to it. Needs some great mid 50’s touches inside, like vintage style laminate pattern counters, a real drop in sink with a Hudee ring, an age appropriate vintage style set of kitchen appliances, say from …… Oh, dangit – what’s the name of that company that’s making all the cool retro style appliances in the gorgeous colors?

Just a couple of ideas, and add some gorgeous vintage fabrics, in upholstery and window curtains, to bring out the real mid-50’s vibe it deserves!
