How this Guy Created an 8 Room Micro Apartment with 182 Sq. Ft.

I think you’re going to love how this guy turned a 182 sq. ft. storage space into an awesome, fully livable 8-room micro apartment in Seattle.

That’s right. At first he was just looking for some storage space to keep some of his extra stuff. Once he took a better look, he immediately realized that the space had more potential than just for storage.

Since he used to design airplane interiors for Boeing, he decided to use his expertise to create a home that would fit into the 182-square-foot storage space.

Stacking to Create more Functionality into the Space

How did Steve manage to create 8 different functions within such a tiny space? He did it by stacking functions, as he calls it. For example, there’s a cafe area directly above the video lounge.

In another area, there’s a bedroom loft directly above a walk-in closet and office area. And there’s more.

Video Tour of this Seattle 182 Sq Ft Stacking Micro Apartment

In the main room, the floor space has room for a transforming table. Below the entry way you can find a Japanese-style tub hidden below. Reminds me of Jay Shafer’s component furnishings for tiny houses. This tiny place is full of surprises.

What About Steve’s Stuff?

He ended up getting rid of most of those things and bought the space to start the project instead. 🙂

Good design! Unfortunately there are people living in their storage units after losing their homes so I am sure someone is thinking this might work for them.

Head room looks a little low but he seems to be making it work.

By “8-room,” I thought it was going to be eight separate rooms, though now I see he kinda create multiple rooms within one room. It looks like, and reminds me of a jungle gym for adults and I think this is something that might be useful for college dorms but am not sure if the layout showcased here would be practical on a long-term basis. Then again, people only need a place to sleep, shower and eat, so I guess (as this guy has proven), it could work for some folks.

I’m fairly sure that most people need more from “home” than a place to *sleep, shower and eat” in a storage unit. The resourcefulness here is amazing, but it still is a storage unit – spacewise, esthetically, functionally. It happens to be storing a live human who has had a career designing airplane interiors, one of the most uncomfortable *temporary* occupancy spaces on the planet.

I saw a news snippet about this place while the owner was still in the process of designing and building. l thought it was fascinating then, and extremely well executed after being finished. It is a perfect example of a personal space.

For those who don’t understand the reasoning and philosophy that drove the owner to do this, I highly recommend you go to his website and see. He didn’t’ do this due to financial need.

Taking up a smaller space, and choosing to own less stuff is certainly NOT the American Way of living, but it is making more sense to more and more people.

Sometimes it really is all you need. My younger son spends most of his time working in remote camps or travelling but still likes having his own home base in between. Something like this would be perfect for him and much better than a hotel, shared space or somebody’s spare room.

no, that’s all that’s needed by a lot of people.
if single or only a couple why the heck would you need so much more space? there are even families of 4 living in small or “tiny houses”. i live in a 26′ travel trailer and really have more space than i need.
why take up more space than necessary? why create more work for someone? the more space that you have to sprawl in, the bigger the cleaning job. and unless your the one who is doing all the sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, mopping, washing and everything else you have to do in a home? why make someone else do it?
trust me. when i moved out of my apartment and got rid of all the excess baggage dragging me down? what a glorious feeling of freedom and liberation!!! and i am so grateful that now my kids will never have to do the horrible heartbreaking job that i had to do. i was left to go thru “all” my mother’s stuff and get rid of it after she died. then had to do it all over again when my father was killed 6 months later. believe me, all that “stuff” your saving, holding on to, keeping as mementos, hording for a rainy day is not going to mean a hill of beans to the person that has to paw thru it when you pass. especially pictures of your grandparents and other. they will almost all go in the trash!!!

I have seen this video some time long ago, and I remember watching the video at first, and saying how well he has designed and engineered into this space, and come out with 182 sq ft. of usable space for himself.. The innovations of bath, kitchen, flushing toilet and use of some great materials, where mesmerizing to say the least.. At first thought I had said to myself this guy is off his rocker, and had lost his mind, but as I continued to watch the video, I began to view myself at the time having to live in this space, and say I can do this just look at everything, and how well built it was…! All in all, you have to give him a lot of credit for his accomplishments, and his ability to have it legally consider to be an apartment.. It is with out a doubt a fantastic job…!

Absolutely! You have to love creativity, even if you think it’s a little crazy!

What about security? That window makes it very easy for someone to walk right into his home! Being a former police officer, security is key, for me.

Does it lock? Then I think it’s as safe as any other window.

Look at how large it is. Someone could break that window, and walk in. It is a sliding window, and a lock is not enough. He needs a security system, including a glass break device, to protect his place. Otherwise, he is asking for trouble. I noticed at the beginning, he did not even unlock his door, before entering. Of course, he could have staged it that way. But…in this corrupt world…a person needs to protect himself, and his hard earned property, with some sort of security. Take this from a former law enforcement officer.

An altogether different TH, with the idea of interior plans of a plane. That’s what it looks like to me. Oh well, to each their own!
